We took a group of patients to Atlanta to see Dr. Guy Riekeman and his “Power of One” presentation. It was three hours of an amazing talk geared to show us how powerful each and every one of us is. He showed us how our decisions and actions help to shape the world, either in a positive or negative way. He highlighted five exemplary people who have, with their ideas, changed the course of history. One in particular was Candy Lightner. In 1980, her 13 year old daughter was hit and killed by a drunk driver. “I promised myself on the day of Cari’s death that I would fight to make this needless homicide count for something positive in the years ahead” she wrote. She went on to found M.A.D.D.(Mothers Against Drunk Driving). The object of her organization was to raise public awareness of the serious nature of drunken driving and to promote tough legislation against the crime.
Since that time Candy Lightner has appeared on major television shows, spoke before the US Congress, addressed professional and business groups, and worked tirelessly for years to change public attitudes, modify judicial behavior, and promote tough new legislation. When asked about all the time she had missed with her other children she said that she made a commitment to change the publics opinion on drunk driving to prevent other children and adults from dying at the hands of a drunk driver. Dr. Riekeman’s point was that although the number of drunk driving fatalities is down significantly from 1980, we have no idea how many children haven’t died as a result of her work.
This reminds me of a comment my friend made about chiropractic and its effects on humanity. He said, “The greatest miracle from chiropractic are the unseen miracles.” Most people who come in to our office for care see incredible outward results like the end of migraines, no more low back pain, normalized blood pressure, disappearance of ear infections and colic the true MIRACLES are the ones they will never know about. The lungs that were developing asthma before care, the heart that was functioning abnormally and even the liver that was developing cancer will now never become the disease they might have been.
How could that be. To understand that we must first understand how the body works. Your body was designed by God to control, coordinate and heal itself. It uses the nervous system to achieve this. The brain, spinal cord and nerves, according to Greys Anatomy, control and coordinate every cell, tissue and organ within the body. On a normal day the body produces approximately 10,000 cancer cells. Fortunately we have an immune system which keeps these cells from coming together and forming a cancerous tumor. If the immune system is reduced in function you automatically become more susceptible to developing a tumor. So…what controls the immune system? Your nervous system! And…where is your nervous system housed? In your spine! And if one or more spinal bones move out of their normal position and put pressure on the nerve system(a subluxation), wherever those nerves go to can not and will not function normally. If that happens to be your immune system than you are more susceptible to cancer, heart disease, the flu and even the common cold.
So, we have no idea of how many diseases and problems our patients haven’t gotten due to the unseen miracles of a chiropractic adjustment. Get adjusted and be thankful for the unseen miracles.
Live with Passion. Live clear.
